Weekly Market Summary

On this week’s market summary:

💡1. Goldman Sachs will require proof of vaccination from all staff and clients entering the bank’s offices as vaccine mandates proliferate across the US after the BioNTech/Pfizer Covid-19 jab received full regulatory approval. The company said the requirement would apply to any individual coming to its offices from September 7 and that any employees who were not fully vaccinated would be expected to work from home. From the same date, Goldman will also include fully vaccinated staff in its mandatory weekly Covid testing programme, which currently applies to unvaccinated or partially vaccinated staff.

💡2. A supply chain crunch that was meant to be temporary now looks like lasting well into next year as the surging Delta variant upends factory production in Asia and disrupts shipping, posing more shocks to the world economy. Manufacturers reeling from shortages of key components and higher raw material and energy costs are being forced into bidding wars to get space on vessels, pushing freight rates to records and prompting some exporters to raise prices or simply cancel shipments altogether.

💡3. Non-residential real estate investments into Hong Kong have soared this year, as mainland Chinese and foreign investors snapped up industrial buildings, shops, serviced apartments and car parking bays in the city. Purchases by foreigners and Chinese investors soared to a two-year high of HK$17.3 billion (US$2.2 billion) in the eight months through mid-August, according to data compiled by Midland IC&I, which tracks non-residential property deals larger than HK$100 million. Investors domiciled in mainland China made up HK$8.53 billion, or 49 per cent of the deals, the highest since the city’s anti-government protests of 2019, the data showed.

💡4. Hong Kong stocks rallied by the most in four weeks as traders scooped up bargains in Alibaba Group Holding and other Chinese tech companies after the local market hit a 10-month low last week. The Hang Seng Index rose 2.3 per cent to 25,677.99 at the close of Tuesday trading, its biggest advance since July 29, adding to a 1.1 per cent on Monday. The market slipped into a bear market last week with a loss of more than 20 per cent from its February peak.
