On this Week’s Market Summary:
💡1. Singapore’s state-owned investor Temasek Holdings Pte. sold shares of U.S.-listed Chinese technology companies from Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and Didi Global Inc. to online education providers amid regulatory crackdowns. Temasek cut 16% of its stake in e-commerce giant Alibaba and 11% of its shares in ride-hailing service Didi, according to a 13F filing for the three months ended Sept. 30. These six ADRs tumbled by 9 per cent to 81 per cent in the third quarter, according to Bloomberg data. On average, Temasek may have realised about US$160 million of losses on them, according to the Post’s calculation based on the IPO and declines in those stocks during the quarter.
💡2. Investors are snapping up commercial properties in Australia with the rare support of Hong Kong buyers despite lingering Canberra-Beijing tensions, pushing the market Down Under towards its busiest in six years. Commercial property investment involving deals above A$10 million has reached A$35.4 billion (US$26 billion) to date, a 70 per cent increase from a year earlier, according to Colliers International. The volume is within 17 per cent of the A$41.3billion recorded in 2015. The decision appears to be aiding the real estate market, which has suffered from the withdrawal of mainland Chinese buyers as diplomatic relations deteriorated.
💡3. The Chief Executive of Germany’s biggest bank has called on central bankers to tighten monetary policy to provide “countermeasures” against surging inflation, which he warned was producing risky side effects and would last longer than policymakers expected. They also highlight growing concern about the recent rise in German inflation to a three-decade high of 4.6 per cent in October. The $27tn rise in global government, corporate and household debt to $226tn last year, based on IMF figures, was “simply unsustainable in the long term and a constant potential trouble spot for the global financial markets”, Sewing warned.
💡4. Family offices in the Asia-Pacific have seen their wealth grow faster than global peers this year, as they have shown a greater willingness to invest in private equity and risky new asset classes such as cryptocurrencies, according to the 2021 Global Family Office Report released on Wednesday. Twenty-nine per cent of these family offices in the region reported a significant increase in wealth over the last 12 months, more than the global average of 21 per cent.
